Offshore Patrol Vessels: The Combat Jack of All Naval Trades
Multi-mission naval offshore patrol vessels are logically the next evolutionary step for naval forces worldwide. Historically, however, it has been difficult to re-purpose traditional offshore patrol vessels such as corvettes and frigates for a broad range of missions: disaster relief, maritime interdiction, SAR, hydrography and surface warfare, to name a few. Rene Quezada is the Naval Project Manager for Fassmer and describes how OPV design lends itself to fulfilling the broad palette of missions required today, especially by the Chilean and Argentinean navies.
