9.00 Opening Remarks from Conference Chair

9.10 KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: OPENING KEYNOTE: Rare Earths in Western Australia: Their Presence & Future Directions

This session will focus on the current prospects and occurrences of rare earths in Western Australia. Furthermore it will look at future directions for the state and government initiative that encourage exploration. This session will cover:

  • Known deposits, prospects, and occurrences of rare earths in Western Australia
  • Likely development scenarios of mines for rare earths in Western Australia
  • Exploration potential for further discoveries in Western Australia
  • Government initiatives that encourage exploration.

9.50 CASE STUDY: The Machinga Niobium-Rare Earths Project (Malawi): Determining if you have an Economically Viable Material

Whether you come across rare earth elements in a targeted exploration, or by accident, it is crucial to determine the potential commercial viability of your site. This session will look at ‘the next step’ and focus on an analysis around production, demand and supply.

  • Rare earths and their associated minerals; determining viable elements
  • Focusing on value: heavy rare earths
  • Exploration methods for heavy rare earths
  • Maximising the value of your rare earth and strategic metal by understanding critical market demand
  • Understanding your local jurisdiction and the effects it will have on the progression and time frame of your project from exploration to production

RESOURCE STAR LIMITED

10.30 Morning Tea and Networking Opportunity

11.00 PANEL DISCUSSION: Overcoming the Hurdles: Gaining Access to Capital & Equity

Emerging rare earth companies and strategic metal companies are highly dependent upon being able to gain access to capital markets. Gaining capital allows the funding of new projects, can provide risk capital for exploration and fund temporary negative operating cash fl ows. This session will focus on:

  • Developing a strong engineering study that can be used in order to gain capital
  • Promoting your company in order to expand your investor base
  • Assessing the advantages of Mutual Investments and diversification
  • Examining and assessing the different opportunities for equity investments along your supply chain

Joined by key speakers from the day

11.40 Dealing with Thorium & Uranium

Commonly occurring alongside rare earths & strategic metals is the presence of radioactive material thorium and uranium. This session will focus on the best practices and methods to dealing with and managing these two potentially dangerous materials.

  • Understanding the geological make-up of your geological landscape and how thorium & uranium are often present in rare earth deposits
  • Assessing the safest and most manageable methods for processing radioactive material
  • Increasing your efficiency through Radiation Safety Training
  • Generating data from your mine site to develop your Environmental Impact Statement and accounting for the time and resources this will require
  • Evaluating the complexity of the separation and implementing positive practices on your site

1.20 CASE STUDY: Exploration and Development in the Home of Rare Earth Elements – Scandinavia

Focusing on a European perspective of Rare Earth supply, this session will cover:

  • The European perspective on securing REE supply
  • Tasman’s Norra Karr Heavy REE project – a near term production opportunity

2.00 What are the Strategic and Critical Metals in 2011 and Beyond, and Where do the Rare Earth Metals fit in these Categories?

This session will be presented by Jack Lifton, the founding Principal of Technology Metals Research, LLC, and a specialist in the sourcing and end use trends of rare & strategic metals. This session will focus on:

  • What Strategic and Critical Metals are in high demand in 2011 and Beyond
  • The importance of developing your own comprehension of the rare earth industry and understanding the difficulties and complexities associated with mining rare earth material
  • Where do the Rare Earth Metals fit in these categories?
  • Are we able to produce rare earths and do we have the technical capabilities?

2.40 CASE STUDY: Astron’s Position and View on Rare Earths

This session will be presented by a representative of Astron Limited and will focus on their position and view on rare earths. Astron Limited is a mining and processing company of mineral sands; and in the future, will be a producer of associated down stream products.

Senior Representative, ASTRON LIMITED

3.20 Afternoon Tea and Networking Opportunity

3.50 Queensland’s Rare Earth and Strategic Metal Resources and Potential

  • The Geological Survey of Queensland provides geoscience and resource information to improve the understanding of the geology and minerals and energy resource potential of Queensland. In particular this session will focus on rare earths & strategic metals:
  • Occurrences
  • Geological associations
  • Production
  • Future potential
