9:15 Managing the Impact on the Grid: How to Meet the Demand of Increasing Numbers of EVs?

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are projected to have a significant presence in the auto market by 2012. The expanded deployment of PEVs presents important opportunities for utilities, other power providers and energy storage companies. Many utilities and electricity providers around the country already have begun to prepare for these opportunities of serving this new, significant electricity load, as well as to plan for the challenges that that the additional load to charge these vehicles will present to the transmission and distribution systems. This session will explore the current and future activities that utilities and others are taking, and will need to take, to position themselves to address increased demand and infrastructure issues.

Topics will include:

  • Determining the system-wide and localized impacts from EVs within the next decade
  • How utilities can keep voltage and frequency stable and meet sudden demands for power
  • Effects of potential clustering of EVs and the “cul-de-sac”/ urban residences problem
  • Analysis of new business/communication models such as the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system

10:00 International Lessons: Charting the way to Bring EVs to Market

Globally, countries have experienced an explosive growth in the sales of electric vehicles. These countries have identified electric vehicles as a strategic emerging industry to capitalize on. This session will provide an overview of countries across the globe that are using electric vehicles to invest in cleaner transportation, reduce their carbon footprint and to be immune to the rising cost of oil.

Topics will include:

  • Overview of the goals of the Electric Vehicles Initiative formed by the International Energy Agency
  • Lessons learned from international deployment of vehicles
  • The benefits and pitfalls of the policy approach adopted by China to limit fossil-fueled alternatives

11:30 Strategies for Successful Electric Fleet Deployment

Electric fleets have gained much attention as local governments as well as private organizations look to promote sustainable operations as well as decrease long-term operating costs. In addition to financial savings, companies and agencies can benefit from enhanced reputation as they pioneer the way to reduce dependence on gas. Many questions remain however, regarding the planning and development of fleet deployment. In looking to undertake the burden of a high initial capital investment or easing the transition into full fleet deployment, companies must understand various strategies in achieving the optimal system or set of systems to allow fleet operators to maintain their current productivity. This session will discuss the current and future predications of integrating electric fleet vehicles into the mainstream.

Topics will include:

  • Integrating electric fleets while maintaining productivity
  • Supply chain considerations on fleet deployment
  • Effective strategies on deploying your electric fleet
  • Economic and environmental benefits of EV fleets
  • Overcoming concerns over meeting the range demands of fleet applications

12:15 Networking Luncheon

1:15 Impact of EVs on Tire Development

Tires do much more than just roll down the road while you drive. They are expected to perform in all weather conditions, stop on a dime, last for tens of thousands of miles and today are helping drivers go farther between fill-ups. Learn about how breakthrough new materials and advanced engineering has led to considerable fuel efficiency improvements. During this session Goodyear’s VP of Global Product Development, Joe Zekoski, will share his “Top 10” list of how EVs and hybrids are changing the way tires are developed.
