INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP DAY | Wednesday, 7 December 2011

  • Workshop A: How to ensure grid code compliant wind parks – Turbine integrated solutions versus STATCOM at POC?
  • Workshop B: HVDC vs. AC: Transmission of offshore wind power to the grid
  • Workshop C: Grid code compliant wind turbines
  • Workshop D: European "supergrid" – a new era of energy transmission?

09:00 – 12:00 Workshop A: How to ensure grid code compliant wind parks – Turbine integrated solutions versus STATCOM at POC?

Join this interactive session to learn about and discuss the following topics:

  • Grid code requirements: Frequency, voltage, fault ride-thru
  • Challenges to fulfil grid code requirements in wind parks: Onshore, offshore, impact of HVDC
  • Pros/Cons of different approaches: Partly compliant turbines with SVC / STACOM vs fully compliant turbines
  • Exchange of experience: Executed solutions, reference projects, pilots

09:00 – 12:00 Workshop B: HVDC vs. AC: Transmission of offshore wind power to the grid

For the proposed large-scale offshore wind projects around Europe, problems associated with dynamic stability, short-circuit power, network upgrades etc. are crucial problems to be solved. HVDC developments are the technology trend in this regards to integrate amounts of large offshore wind energy.

Join this workshop to discuss and learn about the following aspects:

  • Benefits and challenges regarding HVDC transmission technology for offshore wind power plants
  • Economic considerations of HVDC technology
  • Results from simulation and modeling

13:00 – 16:00 Workshop C: Grid code compliant wind turbines

International grid codes vary in their specifications and requirements and become ever more stringent. Modern wind turbines need to ensure compliance with the given grid code requirements such as reactive power capability and LV RT functionality.

Join this workshop to discuss:

  • What wind turbine components are crucial for grid code complaints?
  • What are the technical requirements and possible solutions?
  • How can modern wind turbines be adapted to the grid code requirements?
  • What impacts will a harmonisation of the grid code have?

13:00 – 16:00 Workshop D: European "supergrid" – a new era of energy transmission?

There is a growing movement of companies pushing to build a pan-European offshore power network that could help cut carbon emissions and secure energy supply.

If we are to integrate this huge resource into Europe’s transmission system a new transmission system of high voltage direct current infrastructure will be required.

Join this workshop to discuss the technical, operational as well as political issues related to realising a European supergrid. Share your opinion and experiences with other players in this field!
