Developing transportation plans to support growing urban areas

As Oman is facing rapid urbanisation and the authorities are engaged in the construction of ambitious infrastructure projects, how can the Sultanate ensure the development of sustainable and livable communities? This workshop day will introduce participants to efficient planning concepts, processes and practices to build environmentally sustainable urban development projects, ensure smart growth strategies and successful implementation processes. Urban areas across the Middle East are experiencing significant growth. One of the most important aspects of supporting urban growth is to provide the necessary transportation infrastructure. This workshop will review key aspects and components to consider while developing efficient urban transportation planning, including the development of the road network and public transportation plans.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Understanding the key components of an efficient public transportation plan that supports furture urban growth
  • Reviewing basic aspects of the road network development plan such as road classification
  • Identifying missing network elements while considering urban growth needs, including process, identification of primary transit line and location of transit facilities
