Conference Day Two: 26 August 2009

8.30 Registration And Coffee

9.00 Opening Remarks And Presentation From Chair

Maximising the Value of Spatial Information with Effective Data Management & Data Currency Strategies

9.10 Closing The Gap: Can Spatial Data Custodians Make A Difference?

The apology to Indigenous Australians amongst other things recognised the important place land and resources have in their cultural, spiritual, social and economic lives. As one of many data custodians who hold information about interests in land I consider that we collectively can contribute to the reconciliation process by recognising this engagement in land and resources as opportunities arise. Sharing what we are doing in this space is a first step. Highlighting what we are doing to make a difference including:

  • Taking a collaborative approach to building a national framework reference dataset (land tenure) which can acknowledge the primary tenure prior to colonisation as Indigenous
  • Delivering online user access that allows visualisation and inquiry of native title matters over any area of the nation
  • Providing ready and no-cost access to native title spatial datasets to allow integration within an organisations information system to maintain awareness
  • Progressing delivery via web services to further improve service and timeliness/currency of information
  • Collaborating with other custodians to ensure information consistency
  • Deploying and integrating data with existing applications and other government jurisdictions to provide significant value to all stakeholders
  • Ensuring all data is compatible across jurisdictions and datasets which is referenced to the same framework i.e. cadastre and topography

Peter-Bowen Peter Bowen
Principal Geospatial Scientist
NATIONAL NATIVE TITLE TRIBUNAL

9.50 Making Better Business Decisions By Integrating Spatial & Business Data: Answering The Difficult Questions

  • Pooling spatial data and associated business data often stored in disparate systems into one source system to get a single version of truth
  • Reducing the risk - GiS versus Data warehouse or an alternative approach
  • Empowering better decision making: Allowing you access to information faster, with more accuracy, improved performance and service delivery
  • Discussing how to effectively bring together your spatial and business data in an open standards central repository
