Developing effective financial projection techniques is crucial for the refinery industry to reduce cost and maximise profit particularly in today’s extremely volatile economic environment.

IQPC Training’s highly interactive 3-day Refinery Economics series comprising of two training courses has been designed to focus on the concept of ‘smart refining’ using innovative technological advances and cost reduction strategies. The two training programmes cater to two different sets of audience and have been designed based on the depth of knowledge required on refinery economics by each set of functions.

Training Course A: Fundamentals of Refining (1-day programme): 24 November 2008 will enable non finance personnel to get a complete overview of the basic concepts involved in Refinery without going into too much technical detail. The course will enable participants to:

  • Analyse the factors that make refining a profitable venture
  • Understand the effects of hydrocarbon species on crude quality
  • Learn about economic evaluation methods used in refinery economics
  • Get a comprehensive overview of major process units in refining and how they impact bottom line performance

  • Understand the role of the petroleum exchanges and the retail marketing segment

Training Course B: Optimisation of Refinery Economics (2-day programme):25-26 November 2008 addresses the issues faced by people involved in strategic development, financial forecasting and detailed analysis of refining operations. Participants at this two-day course will:

  • Learn the essentials of effective and accurate financial projections
  • Apply industry best practices to optimise operational excellence
  • Identify and analyse key cash flow drivers to ensure higher Return on Investment (ROI)
  • Analyse strengths, suitability and reliability of various refining technologies and their impact on refinery profitability
  • Understand the trends in demand for petroleum and energy that determine the future of refineries globally.

Joe Barth has over 37 years of extensive experience with ExxonMobil and Solomon Associates in all aspects of refinery process performance improvement and profit maximisation. For the past 17 years, he has specialised in Planning and Optimisation (P&O) for integrated refining/petrochemical sites, Linear Programming (LP) modelling and model support best practices.
