Workshop Day: Monday, 21 September 2020

9:00 am - 11:00 am Microgrid Implementation 101: How to Plan and Launch a Microgrid

Sam Lee Mohan - Manager, Innovation Projects, ATCO Gas Division Australia
Technological advancements and a push to more renewable energy usage has seen increased DER and this has led to large scale market disruption in the form of decentralised energy networks. This disruption signals a critical need for players in the energy industry to adapt the operations to maintain relevance, be they generators, distributors, retailers or developers.

In this workshop the decentralised network and the challenges of disruption will be discussed. You will receive guidance on how to adapt your business model and operations to continue to function and succeed in the new energy market. Fundamental stages on implementing stand alone grids and microgrids will be outlined and you will have the opportunity to gain tailored advice on overcoming obstacles to successful adaptation.

How you will benefit:
  • Learn how to respond to the changing market and build a business case for Microgrid implementation
  • Gain insight into asset management and business model adaptation in the evolving market
  • Plan strategies for pilot projects and community engagement : critical steps

11:30 am - 1:30 pm Introducing a Renewable-First Practice into your Business: Operational Considerations and Opportunities to Gain Value

Craig Chambers - Director of Business Development & Transactions, Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency is an independent agency of the Australian federal government which was established to manage Australia’s renewable energy programs. Their objective is to increase supply and competitiveness of Australian renewable energy sources and as such they are well placed to offer insights into the best ways to maximise on the renewable energy economy.

This session will be an opportunity for you to understand the opportunities and challenges in the renewable energy space and will help you to achieve green, carbon reduction objectives set by both company and government in line with a greener energy future. ARENA will discuss the impact of increased DER and how to leverage the opportunities available through renewable resources including the future renewable hydrogen industry.

How you will benefit:
  • Understand the operational impact of increased DER and renewable resources
  • Learn how to adapt the business model to gain economic value from renewable energy
  • Understand the funding behind renewable energy projects to make renewable plans a reality
  • Gain insights into the opportunities available from renewable hydrogen production

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Incorporating Hydrogen into Commercial Scale Hybrid Microgrids

Stevan Green - President, ATCO Gas Division Australia
The move to increased renewable energy resources has led to exploration of the multitudinous opportunities offered by renewable hydrogen. Whether it be for powering vehicles, as a clean energy resource or as a way of storing and transporting energy. Hydrogen experts are looking at the critical role hydrogen will play in the future energy economy and the impact which will be felt on the individual stakeholders in the industry.

ATCO are leading in the hydrogen field and in this workshop the President of the Gas Division, Stevan Green, will share ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub work and lessons learned in designing and building a hybrid microgrid which incorporates renewable hydrogen. The Hub will also be one of the pre-conference site tours – not to be missed for anyone moving in the hydrogen space.

How you will benefit:
  • Learn about the commercial and environmental advantages of hydrogen in hybrid microgrids
  • Understand hydrogen as an enabler of a cleaner energy future
  • Discuss the role of hydrogen in gas distribution and electricity networks
  • Hear of lessons learned from the design and construction of ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub
  • Develop strategies for implementing successful projects involving hydrogen

4:30 pm - 6:30 pm How to Leverage and Optimise Assets and Technologies In Decentralised Market

Gary Bryant - General Manager of Asset Strategy, Alinta Energy
The energy market is becoming increasingly decentralised with DER more and more prevalent and accessible to the customer through such technologies as solar PV. The impact of this market change is seen both in strategy and operations and as a result the utility business model is having to be adapted. As part of this strategic change, assets and infrastructure usage are considered. The cost of building new assets, infrastructure and capability is set to be huge and as such utilities must understand how they can optimise existing infrastructure before they embark on any kind of expensive build.

This workshop will be an opportunity to learn from the expertise of the General Manager of Asset Strategy at Alinta Energy, Gary Bryant. He will guide you on the journey to understanding how your existing infrastructure can be leveraged to save dramatic costs and integrated into the new systems and models which the evolving market demands of the utility.

How you will benefit:
  • Discuss key drivers of change in the current market and impact on various areas of the evolving industry
  • Understand how existing assets can be leveraged in the new environment
  • Gain strategies of integration for new models, infrastructure and technology
