2:10 PM How Western Power are Servicing Remote Communities Through an Evolving Microgrid System: Lessons Learnt and Challenges Encountered

Western Power have been pioneering in the microgrid space in Australia, already having piloted and implemented multiple systems to provide reliable and resilient power. Here they will share lessons learnt from the grids in Perenjori and Kalbarri which is one of Australia’s largest microgrids to run in complete renewable mode at 5MW.

- The evolution of microgrids in the SWIS (south west interconnected system)
- Regional microgrids and customer centricity: Resilience, reliability and cost benefits
- Rolling out 57 standalone power systems servicing farming communities in WA
- Kalbarri and the dynamically connected grid project
  • The vulnerable network and community impact
  • Piloting, community engagement, challenges & results
  • Understanding, adopting and integrating new technologies to better manage customer experience

3:40 PM PANEL DISCUSSION: How Microgrids will Signal a More Reliable and Resilient Energy Future

As electricity grids are challenged by threats of weather, cyber and the rapid growth of distributed energy resources Microgrids are a solution to a more sustainable, secure and reliable energy supply. What’s more they offer the opportunity to utilise more renewable energy resources and move to a greener future. This panel will discuss:

  • Tools, methods and trials for increasing hosting capacity of DER on the network
  • How to make DER work for both for electricity users and the power system
  • Opportunities and strategies for diversifying your asset portfolio and integrating morerenewable energy into operations
