2:00 PM Incorporating Hydrogen into Commercial Scale Hybrid Microgrids

The move to increased renewable energy resources has led to exploration of the multitudinous opportunities offered by renewable hydrogen. Whether it be for powering vehicles, as a clean energy resource or as a way of storing and transporting energy. Hydrogen experts are looking at the critical role hydrogen will play in the future energy economy and the impact which will be felt on the individual stakeholders in the industry.

ATCO are leading in the hydrogen field and in this workshop the President of the Gas Division, Stevan Green, will share ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub work and lessons learned in designing and building a hybrid microgrid which incorporates renewable hydrogen. The Hub will also be one of the pre-conference site tours – not to be missed for anyone moving in the hydrogen space.

How you will benefit:
  • Learn about the commercial and environmental advantages of hydrogen in hybrid microgrids
  • Understand hydrogen as an enabler of a cleaner energy future
  • Discuss the role of hydrogen in gas distribution and electricity networks
  • Hear of lessons learned from the design and construction of ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub
  • Develop strategies for implementing successful projects involving hydrogen

Conference Day One: Tuesday, 22 September 2020

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020

5:10 PM How ATCO are Responding to the Changing Energy Market by Unlocking the Value of Hybrid Energy Solutions

The move to increased renewables has led to exploration of the opportunities offered by renewable hydrogen. ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub was created to explore how existing gas distribution infrastructure can continue to benefit customers as part of the future energy mix. In this session, ATCO will share their expertise in the future energy and hydrogen space, including the future industry opportunities and challenges which may need to be overcome on the journey.

  • The potential of hydrogen and renewable resources as part of the future energy mix
  • Clean Innovation Hub: A test bed for hybrid energy solutions
  • Integration of natural gas, solar power, battery storage and hydrogen production
  • Leveraging existing networks and infrastructure: the role of hydrogen gas in the electricity network
  • Hydrogen opportunities for the Australian market: exporting to Asian markets, hydrogen vehicles, energy storage

Conference Day Two: Wednesday, 23 September 2020

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020

11:10 AM PANEL DISCUSSION: The Role and Value of Renewable Hydrogen in the Electricity Market of the Future

As renewable hydrogen is beginning to reach cost parity with some fossil fuel equivalents it has high potential to not only contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy network, but to be a high value export opportunity for Australia.

  • Room for innovation in the electricity market: hydrogen, why now?
  • Hydrogen as an enabler of a cleaner energy future: possibilities in battery storage, transport, carbon neutrality & more
  • South East Asia: prospects for Australia to gain value from hydrogen as an export opportunity
  • Barriers to successful maximization of hydrogen and how can government help to alleviate?

10:30 AM ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub

ATCO’s industry-leading Clean Energy Innovation Hub is a test bed for hybrid energy solutions, integrating natural gas, solar PV, battery storage and hydrogen production and storage. The Hub is providing valuable insights into how ATCO’s existing gas distribution infrastructure can continue to service consumers as part of the future energy mix, as well as developing new energy solutions which ATCO can offer our customers in the future.

In addition to viewing the Hub and seeing how it is generating and using clean hydrogen, visitors will take a tour through ATCO’s demonstration hybrid home, and view real-time data on how we are generating, storing and using various forms of energy.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to take in ATCO’s Six Seasons Garden, and see and hear how the business is paying respect to the traditional owners of the land, by acknowledging and celebrating the six seasons of the traditional Nyoongar calendar.

Tour break down:
  1. Six Seasons Garden - Demonstrating 60,000 years of culture and heritage and telling the story of local native vegetation and the role it plays in the six seasons, history and culture of the Nyoongar people
  2. ATCO Hybrid Home - Insights into a clean energy home of the future
  3. Clean Energy Innovation Hub - An insight into hydrogen powered microgrids and ATCO's integration of a green hydrogen plant
  4. Training centre - Introduction to the here and now, looking at technology capabilities currently available
  5. Networking lunch - Guests return to the Blue Flame Kitchen for a networking lunch
