Dr. Nicholas Grunnet

Dr. Grunnet is specialised in the fields of coastal engineering with emphasis on coastal protection works and beach nourishment projects. Based on research work on the morphodynamics of shoreface nourishments conducted in the Netherlands and in the USA, Dr. Grunnet has acquired an extensive knowledge of sediment transport processes and coastal zone dynamics. He has now more than 20 years of experience in shoreline management, coastal protection schemes and conceptual designs of harbour layouts.

Prior to his specialisation in coastal processes, Dr. Grunnet was engaged as a design manager and structural engineer in the fields of marine structures. His experience with structural engineering includes tender design, detail design and rehabilitation surveys of major civil works

2:00 PM Ensuring swimming safety on artificial islands

A holiday potential often drives island development. Artificial islands have recreational value only if beautiful stable beaches and pristine coastal waters are created and swimming remains safe. These elements are however not guaranteed. A prerequisite for success can be achieved by using numerical models of the island to test its hydraulic sustainability and develop concepts in line with the architectural and functional requirements of the project. The island model is fundamental for success and should encompass the complexity of local coastal zone processes. The focus of this presentation will be on ensuring swimming safety to satisfy also this aspect of high-end resort tourism.
