Workshops: Monday, 4 March 2019
9:00 am - 11:00 am Adopting New and Innovative Methods to Optimise Existing Ports
To ensure ports are being utilised effectively, the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) is working with 14 interconnected ports across Europe, with the Port of Rotterdam one of their largest and most prominent structures.
This workshop will delve into the port’s new Sea Traffic Management System (STM), which will allow ships and ports to interconnect closely to the digitialised world. In order to do this, however, SMA ensured they were able to estimate the accurate time of ship departures, build ports efficiently to cater to larger vessels and have all ships connected to ports through real-time data.
In this highly interactive workshop Fredrik Karlsson, one of the founding fathers of STM, will cover the way ports can utilise new technologies to improve existing structures.

11:30 am - 1:30 pm Integrating Software into Terminal Simulation
Catering to growth and the demand for improved systems, this workshop will address terminal simulation software and its application.
Kenan Aldemir and Shane Freeman will deliver an in-depth look on how ports can effectively develop their skills in terminal simulation, which will provide ports and engineering groups greater certainty and accuracy in the long term.
This workshop will cover the following areas:
- The technical approaches to the development of terminal simulation
- An understanding of transit times and queuing within terminal simulation
- Identifying issues and addressing these effectively

Site Visit to Patrick Terminals
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Patrick Terminals is a leading terminal that operates several of the country’s most advanced, simulated container stations and handles nationally on average 3 million containers.
In this tour guests will receive a presentation on the terminal’s operations tower and fully automated cranes.
Your guide, Terminal Manager Matt Hollamby, will narrate the terminal’s operations during the tour where you will be able to ask and get your questions answered
