3:10 pm - 3:30 pm Regional Case Study: Masdar - advanced energy-efficient desalination pilot project

Masdar has a range of stepped targets through to 2036 designed to increase the amount of clean energy used in future desalination plants, spends  $100m a year on  research  and  development. It  is  estimated  that 76  million  tonnes  of  CO2 is  emitted  annually  due to desalination processes. Masdar has forecasted that  by 2040 desalination will be responsible for 218 million tonnes of CO2 a year due to the need to build and operate more desalination plants to meet water demands. This session will showcase the strategies and establishment of the desalination pilot project by Masdar to increase energy efficiency within the region.

Public administrations, also private companies, have to adapt to these new demands that represent a change in the relationship with citizens, a cultural change based on what is known as open government, a new way to do policy based on transparency, open data and citizen participation, where technology is the vehicle that will allow us to implement it.
