Courtyard Hamburg City, Hamburg, Germany

Workshop Day

9:00 am - 9:30 am Registration for Workshops A and D

9:30 am - 12:00 pm DESIGN & PRODUCTION OF SAFE HIGH-POWER BATTERIES

The high safety requirements in aerospace are a challenge for battery design and production.
In this workshop, the participants will work in groups and discuss a realistic roadmap for:
• The design and production of high-power batteries
• That meet the expectations of authorities like EASA, CAA, FAA
Including 15 minutes coffee break.

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch break and registration for WS B & E

1:30 pm - 2:00 pm SIMULATION OF POWER ELECTRONICS FOR STORAGE

Power electronics converters are the interface between the solar panels, storage and the appliances.
Their efficiency and mode of operation determines the operational life time and usage of
the battery. The presentation focuses on the different topologies, their controllability and thermal
behavior. Minimizing losses by selecting different power electronics converter topologies, or
using a standard circuit. Paralleling by interleaving increases fail-safe operation, but could also
minimizes losses during partial load operation. In this workshop, the participants will have the
opportunity to discuss:
• Overview of power electronics converters for storage
• Power management and behavioral/thermal simulation of power converters
• Modeling charging and discharging control via droop control
• Fail safe operation or loss minimization by paralleling
Including 15 minutes coffee break.

1:30 pm - 4:00 pm HYBRID ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS

This workshop will focus on electric & hybrid electric propulsion systems and their components.
Methods for characterizing size and performance of prime movers, electric components
(generators, rectifiers, inverters, power distribution, motors), propulsors and the thermal
management system will be discussed. The workshop will included several full system model
examples and exercises.
Including 15 minutes coffee break.

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm Coffee break and registration for WS C & F

4:30 pm - 7:00 pm SAFE BATTERY & HYDROGEN STORAGE INTEGRATION (INTO THE AIRCRAFT ARCHITECTURE & ELECTRIC SYSTEM)

The safe integration of energy storage solutions (like batteries, fuel cells/hydrogen tanks) not only
into aircraft architecture, but especially into the electric system is a crucial factor for the safety
of an airplane. In this workshop, the participants will have the possibility to work in groups and
discuss:
• Safe battery and
• Fuel cell/hydrogen storage integration into both systems

4:30 pm - 7:00 pm Titel Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in Europe & Beyond

From a technological perspective, Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is within reach. However, is this a small step or a big leap for both the engineer and for society? Topics discussed in this workshop include but are not limited to:
--Current state of the art: How far is UAM along and how far do we still have
--Technical areas that warrant more attention; which skills are needed and where to find them --Working together or be secretive? Pros and cons of working alone
--Common interest vs competitive edge: How can we work together to ensure safe and successful UAM?
