2:00 PM Panel Discussion: How Will Our Rail Operations Capability, Skills & Processes Transform To Support A Hyper-Automated, High Frequency Rail Network?

As all operators across the freight and passenger rail networks work towards introducing varying levels of automation and moving towards a digitised and data-driven approach to train signalling and control, the ROC set up of today will no longer be effective. In this session, hear key industry leaders about how they are thinking, planning and implementing changes and what do they expect to see as the foundations for a successful ROC of the future.

  • How will emerging technologies and automation impact the current ROC set up and the larger cross-departmental rail organisation?
  • How is the role of data being leveraged and elevated in the ROC?
  • What are the key ROC staff will witness significant change and how? What new skills and mindsets will form the ROC staff of the future?
  • What challenges do you anticipate with transforming legacy ROC environments?
  • What lessons from previous projects will you take into the roll of change in the ROC?

2:40 PM Cross River Rail Case Study: Lessons From Creating Operational Readiness For A Future Proof Rail Network Relying On ETCS and Automatic Train Operation Capability

At Cross River Rail, Simon Cook is heading up Qld Government’s efforts that act as the foundation for its intent to modernise its signalling systems and control environments. Through the staged rollout of ETCS which will be complimented by automation and digitisation, a vision for improved safety, productivity and capacity management across Qld Rail is being charted. In this session, Simon will cover experiences and lessons learned from:

  • Analyzing existing operational environment for changes critical to the success in the ETCS environment
  • Learning from international case studies around ATO roll out – dos and don’ts
  • Overcoming challenges with integrating legacy environments and systems with the modern signalling environment
  • Early implications of imminent changes of ETCS roll out to traditional staff skills and roles
