Philip van den Heuvel is the co-founder and CFO/COO of Breeze, a dating app that skips the swiping and endless chatting. Breeze matches people algorithmically and books them directly onto a real, in-person date at a partnered venue: no months of messaging that lead nowhere. The model avoids many of the safety issues common to traditional dating apps, such as scams, while introducing new questions around identity, trust, and real-world safety. Philip leads operations, finance, and trust infrastructure, and oversees the development of scalable safety tooling for a small team operating at consumer scale.
As platforms increasingly facilitate real-world interactions, ensuring user safety beyond the screen has become a critical trust and safety challenge. Breeze has taken a different approach to online-to-offline risk by embedding safety directly into the dating experience. This case study explores why in-person, venue-based safety mechanisms can be more effective than remote tools, and how platforms can design practical, scalable protections into the environments where user interactions actually take place.
