9:10 AM Keynote Presentation: Alfred Health’s EMR Portal and Their Implementation Journey – Creating Greater Transparency and Access to Important Health Information

Alfred Health is among the first adult hospitals in Australia to initiate a patient portal as part of their EMR, giving patients and their families greater access to health information. Gordon will outline challenges faced in implementing a comprehensive hybrid EMR and its impact on patients and clinicians since going live in July this year:

  • Improving visibility of health information across all clinical areas
  • Adopting an opt in vs opt out approach to patient recruitment – The pros and cons of each strategy and how to raise awareness and patient engagement in the portal
  • Whilst the portal is a must-have feature of their EMR offering greater access to big data and transparency, continuous engagement with clinicians and consumers is critical to designing and improving key portal functionality
  • Zero to hero vs. gradual change – Easing clinicians into the portal to win their support and confidence

10:10 AM Panel Discussion: Building a Digital Workforce to Combat Digital Fatigue

Digital fatigue can happen to the best of us. However with the right approach, we can overcome it by developing a clinical workforce that is digitally-aware and digitally-enabled. This panel will discuss key issues around digital fatigue that you may face:

  • Digital education – Devising an effective training program for new starters as this will impact operational efficiency, maintaining high staff
  • engagement and debating the need for mandatory digital competencies to be completed on an annual basis
  • Cognitive flow for senior clinicians – Impact of digitalisation on their performance and capacity to perform
  • Impact of systems that don’t interface as data entry, workflows and procedures become increasingly complicated
  • Alert fatigue for clinical decision support – Educating staff to not disengage from pop ups that might require immediate action
  • Information overload – How to present clinicians with just the right amount to avoid this overload
