4:20 PM Case Study: A Pharmacy Perspective on the Impact of EMR Implementation and Automation on Workflows and Health Outcomes

The implementation of a fully digital system in a large tertiary public hospital-Princess Alexandria Hospital (PA) has paved the way forward for implementation in other Queensland Health institutions. The impact on staff – not only pharmacists but all involved in patient care – has been significant, with workflows constantly evolving and being impacted by automation, which provided a platform for PA to achieve HIMMS Level 6.  Lynette will illustrate:

  • Main lessons learnt, in particular the need to work collaboratively across disciplines, have clear clinical and operation governance and acknowledging that change is an ongoing feat, as the system will not only prevent problems but also create its own
  • How to realise the potential of live data extracted from EMR, including the opportunity to integrate data to help integrate care, drive quality improvement and allow clinicians to make comprehensive assessments of their patients and proactively manage risk
  • PA’s large scale robotic dispensing system (the first of its kind in Australia) – How the pharmacy uses barcoding technology to maximise medicine management by improving prescription turnaround times, significantly reducing error rates and increasing staff morale as overtime is reduced
