3:00 PM Successfully Integrating Systems into Existing Networks and How to Ensure Continuous Safety and Reliability of the Network

Moving more towards digitalisation, automation and integrating new infrastructure and systems into existing networks has its challenges. Not only do you need to consider the testing of it with little disruption as possible, but also ensure consistency with its performance on the network. Globally, many rail organisations have been ambitious in executing their strategies and applications of new technology. In light of the investments in Australia’s current rail network, this workshop will discuss best practice cases for the installation, operation and maintenance of systems in existing networks.

What will the workshop cover?
  • Embedding digital systems and train control solutions to meet expectations on affordability and asset sustainability
  • How to minimise the disruption for customers with updates to systems and roll out of new services
  • Evaluating the client side and supplier side and how to work effectively together to understand the responsibilities in testing and commissioning
  • Understanding your capabilities and business requirements to upgrade and invest in technologies that align with future strategies

2:50 PM CASE STUDY: How to Deliver CBTC and ETCS Projects for Reliable Performance Increase

All four biggest cities in Australia have selected the technology for their next generation of railway signalling. Some railways go with CBTC while others use ETCS in enhanced Level “2+” variants. Now the challenge is to deliver actual projects with those new technologies. Without relevant reference projects within Australia, lessons learned from pitfalls of comparable international projects is a best practice method for avoiding the repetition of known mistakes. International case studies presented in this session include:

  • The best choice: Reasonable procurement steps into delivery disaster
  • Wagging the dog: Bespoke product customisation versus global mainstream
  • She’ll be right: The complacency risk of taking anything for granted
  • Walk the talk: Lessons learned beyond shortterm promises
