Understanding the varying individual needs of inmates and tailoring
services to accommodate these is at the heart of ensuring meaningful
rehabilitation. With shifting ideals of what constitutes rehabilitation in
today’s society, organisations are finding leveraging partnerships, leading
practical initiatives, and providing effective care and security are paving the
way for successful re-integration
As the year comes to an end and we enter into a new decade
it is a time to reflect on the challenges of the past year and start preparing
for the coming year. While there will always be new and unexpected challenges
in the field of corrections, many of the issues previously experienced provide
a hypothetical barometer of the issues corrections can expect to face in 2020
and beyond.
Below is an overview of those issues that are likely to
continue as challenges in the field of corrections. Here we intentionally use
the word “continue” because anyone with a background in corrections will
recognise that most of these issues represent ongoing problems – just because
we shift to a new year, or indeed a new decade, the problems neither reset nor
erase themselves. While the below isn’t
an all inclusive list, it does represent some of the biggest challenges facing
Australian correction, and reflects on both local and global trends in Future
Justice & Corrections.
