Hugh Karena is of Māori descent from the Far and Mid-North of Northland, affiliated with the iwi of Te Aupouri, Ngāi Takoto, and Ngāpuhi.
With deep connections to his communities in the North, Hugh is passionate about addressing the challenges faced by those living in rural areas, where long travel distances, high costs, and limited employment opportunities contribute to increased living expenses - with energy being a key component. Hugh is committed to exploring solutions that reduce energy costs and improve access for Māori communities.
He advocates for self-sufficiency (tino rangatiratanga), environmental stewardship (kaitiakitanga), and sustainable partnerships with Māori landholders to support renewable energy development and climate resilience.
He looks forward to engaging with leaders across the energy sector to share ideas, discuss opportunities, and strengthen collaboration. Tēnā koutou katoa.
