With Marvel Stadium at the centre of this division, and seating over 50,000 attendees, the AFL is focused on driving citizen engagement and creating long term, futureproofed strategies to improve both design and execution.

11:00 am - 12:20 pm Case Study: Future Proofing ANZ and Bankwest Stadium through the Integration of Modern Facilities

With the NSW Government confirming an $810 million redevelopment of ANZ stadium, this is expected to see the venue transform into a world-class, 70,000 seat rectangular venue. At the same time, Venues NSW is transforming Bankwest Stadium into a future-proofed, modern facility. This is being complete through the implementation of new facilities, which includes a million dollar underground drainage system that will ensure the arena is playable after deluges.

David Edwards, Projects Chief Executive at the Department of Innovation, Tourism, Industry Development and Commonwealth Games, will present on the importance of precinct redevelopment in driving tourism and economic growth within Australia and the Asia Pacific. With $3.6 billion invested in Queen’s Wharf alone, and a $2 billion proposal for Brisbane Live, these projects are being proposed with the intention of driving tourism and growth. It is here David will discuss the importance of precinct redevelopment, as well as updating and modernising facilities.

With a $1.6 billion injection into WA’s Perth stadium and its surrounding infrastructure, this area is activating the public space while connecting fans to new entertainment engagements. Mike McKenna, CEO of Optus Stadium, will present on the work the organisation is doing to manage the stadium and drive stakeholder engagement.

3:10 pm - 3:50 pm Using a Reinvigorated Precinct as a Catalyst for Urban Regeneration

Tim O’Loan, Director of Cities at AECOM, will present a project-based case study on the work AECOM have undergone to deliver several entertainment precincts across Australia and NZ. With a $1.5 billion development in 2016 for Sydney’s International Convention Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct, and their assistance in the London Olympic Games master plan in late 2000, Tim will discuss the best methods to create a multipurpose precinct that can be used for sporting, entertainment as well as schooling events.

  • Determining how the broader precincts are able to connect with cafes, retailers, arenas and entertainment venues at large
  • Connecting the financial and economic aspects of running a stadium through working with relevant stakeholders

3:50 pm - 4:30 pm Developing an Event Ready Public Space to Drive Precinct Masterplan Success

Ray Marshall, Principal at ARM Architecture will deliver a presentation on the role of events to generate activity and vitality in commercial, civic and residential precincts. Understanding the complexities of delivering spaces that are event ready and yet also vital and intimate when not in event mode, Ray will discuss various recent projects he has undertaken and the important role that successful public space has in precinct success.

  • Understanding the role of architects in developing and championing a holistic precinct design
  • Identifying essential and robust project principles to steer a project through cost pressures and approval processes
  • Balancing the competing design requirements of events and desirable public space
