12:10 PM Bulk Handling Equipment at Ports – Replacement or Refurbishment?

Many existing bulk material port facilities are at the end of their original nominal design life. Owners are faced with the decision on whether to refurbish existing equipment such as shiploaders, stackers, reclaimers and car dumpers or procure replacement machines. There are also continuing pressures on existing terminals for increased throughput and to accept larger ships.

Traditionally, owners would carry out a refurbishment to allow the life of their equipment to be extended. However, due to the continuing strong demand for commodity exports and high equipment utilisation levels, downtime is critical. Thus, decisions between refurbishment and replacement equipment can have a big impact on port capacity, cost and revenue. Richard Morgan from Aspec Engineering will present the factors associated with the service life of different port bulk handling equipment types, including:

  • Design and environmental standards
  • Equipment loads on port infrastructure
  • Statutuary Compliance
  • Machine configuration and efficiency
  • Safety and automation
