Does the year ahead promise a series of turbulent storms or carefree sunny days for our General Counsels and Chief Compliance Officers?

Following our extensive research ahead of the upcoming Corporate Counsel and Compliance Exchange, find out what our Event Director Kekeli Gohoho predicts for the In House legal and compliance sector in 2019.

Prediction #1: Legal Operations Heatwave

"It is no secret; General Counsels are on the lookout to further the efficiency of their department. Although we predict automation and technology will remain as prominent options to furthering efficiency efforts, I also predict restructuring the legal department to include an official Head of Legal Operations will become a popular choice. Heavily regulated industries, such as banking and pharmaceuticals, have already introduced this role, as well as larger companies across the pond in the USA. We’re looking forward to talking more about these developments with our expert speakers, to include the Global Head of Legal Operations from Nokia and the European Head of Legal Operations from HSBC at our next event." - Kekeli Gohoho

Prediction #2: Sunny Artificial Intelligence Spells

"Automation tools have gained a household name among the modern day General Counsels and Chief Compliance Officers. These tools are now embedded in several capacities such as contract management, cyber security and risk management, in order to free up time that would otherwise be spent on low risk, impersonal tasks. The next step? We predict smarter self learning AI tools are on the rise. Check out our recommended AI tools chosen by you. In 2018, 41% of our Corporate Counsel and Compliance Exchange delegates rated Artificial Intelligence for Legal and Compliance as a high or medium investment priority category in advance of our bi-annual investment report. Our prediction for 2019 is that this percentage will grow even more." - Kekeli Gohoho

Prediction #3: It’s Raining Ethics

"We predict that going beyond GDPR, in order to protect potentially damning brand reputation, is a high growth concern for General Counsels and Chief Compliance Officers going into 2019. Legislation is getting tighter: GDPR, Sapin II and the 5th EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive have now all entered into force. Scandals are lingering in the mind of the consumer for even longer; the Danske Bank and Facebook scandals are yet to be forgotten. New technologies, like AI solutions, provide exciting opportunities, but ensuring the ethics of these solutions are perfect is another challenge our General Counsels and Chief Compliance Officers are keen to tackle. Embedding ethics all through the organisation is more vital than ever!" - Kekeli Gohoho
