Brett Horwell is the Head of Electricity Supply at Meridian Energy, New Zealand’s largest renewable electricity generator. With over a decade of leadership in the energy sector, Brett plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, resilience, and sustainability of Meridian’s hydroelectric portfolio—spanning iconic assets like Manapōuri and Waitaki. A qualified mechanical engineer with an MBA from the University of Canterbury, Brett combines deep technical expertise with strategic foresight. He is a passionate advocate for clean energy, known for championing innovation in asset management, digital transformation, and electrification of transport and operations. At Meridian, Brett leads cross-functional teams focused on operational excellence, future-proofing hydro infrastructure, and navigating the challenges of climate variability. His work has been instrumental in Meridian’s response to recent droughts and in shaping the company’s long-term strategy to support New Zealand’s transition to a net-zero energy future. Brett is also a sustainability champion, committed to connecting communities and powering progress through nature-inspired solutions. His leadership has helped drive Meridian’s efforts to electrify its vehicle fleet, modernise underground hydro operations, and unlock new efficiencies in energy supply.
