Conference Day One - Tuesday 24th March 2026

2:30 PM Presentation: Free Expression vs. Proactive Safety: Moderating Open Platforms at Scale

For open publishing platforms, trust and safety is about constant trade-offs. Automattic’s mission to democratise publishing puts free expression at the core, while still requiring firm, proactive enforcement to protect users and platform integrity. This session explores how Automattic is evolving its approach, and where AI is helping shift from reactive moderation to earlier, more effective intervention.
Balancing free speech principles with proactive trust and safety enforcement
  • Using AI to reduce signal noise and focus human review on real harm
  • Applying toxicity classifiers to surface emerging risks, not just policy breaches
  • Educational nudges as a tool to shape behaviour before enforcement is needed
  • Why bad actors are already using AI, and why platforms cannot afford not to
