Stephan Vogler is the co-founder and CEO of CipSoft GmbH. As early as 1996, he began developing the MMORPG Tibia, which still ranks among Europe's most successful online games. The success of this project led to the founding of CipSoft in 2001. Since then, the company has worked on several online games for various platforms, including the upcoming MMORPG Persist Online. CipSoft also offers MultiPayer, a payment system tailored to online and multiplayer games, building on decades of experience from operating Tibia.
Released in 1997, Tibia stands as one of the earliest MMORPGs ever created. The genre peaked between 2008 and 2010, when the game reached around one million active users. Since then, most MMORPGs have seen steady declines, but Tibia challenged one of live service gaming's most entrenched assumptions: that declining engagement inevitably leads to declining revenue. In 2025, the German studio behind the game achieved its strongest year yet, with Tibia driving record revenue of nearly €30 million. In this case study, Stephan Vogler, CEO and Co-Founder of CipSoft, explains how a long-term monetisation strategy, carefully aligned with community needs, can create lasting competitive advantage and even reignite player growth.
