Six months ago, every AI roadmap conversation was about headcount. That conversation is over. In a recent closed-door session with engineering leaders from some of the world's largest enterprises, not one mentioned reducing headcount. They talked about security exposure and a code review bottleneck that's quietly eating the productivity AI was supposed to deliver. Developers are shipping more code than ever, but they aren't shipping it faster, because a human still has to review and merge every line, and reviewers are drowning. Meanwhile, security has become the boardroom-level risk AI created, and SRE and platform engineers, the people who can actually contain it, are the hardest hires on the market, and the hardest to keep. Drawing on direct conversations with Fortune 500 engineering leadership, this talk makes the case that SRE and Platform Engineering aren't AI's back office anymore. They're the control plane that determines whether AI-generated code will ever be trustworthy enough to ship at scale.
